Duck Island Yacht Club (DIYC), founded in 1932 as a sailing association, is a charter member of the Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association (ECSA). Located in Clinton/Westbrook, DIYC for many years raced only one-design boats such as; Manchester's, Duck Island OD's, Zips, Sun Fish, Albacore's and Ensigns. Today our fleet consists of race/cruisers from 22-52 feet, Sportboats, JY 15's, and several power boats.
Although we have continued our racing tradition we also enjoy extensive cruising and social programs - something for everyone.
Our Clubhouse, located off Hammock Dock Road, we erected in 1986 on the Patchogue River in Westbrook. The Clubhouse and Facility is the center of our social and recreational functions, which compliment our on-water activities.
We run over 250 races in a season. Our program consists of 3 Wednesday evening series, and a Thursday evening one-design series for JY 15's and Lasers. For longer distance racing we have 2 series run on weekends (one for women), an overnight race, a single handed race, and 2 ECSA regatta's. In addition, DIYC sponsors regional one-design regattas and is involved with the Special Olympics Sailing Program.
For area sailors who would like to try sailboat racing on a low key, supervised basis, we offer the "Commodore's Invitational Race" early in the season. DIYC also co-sponsors a junior and novice learn to sail program.
For those who would rather just go sailing than race (many do both), we have weekend and holiday cruises to destinations along the Connecticut and Long Island Shores, Block Island and an annual two-week cruise. The camaraderie of cruising with other DIYC boats is fun and provides a support system while sailing and anchoring that makes everyone feel comfortable. At our destination there is always friendly socializing including cocktail parties, games, and dinghy racing for kids and adults.
The annual two week Club Cruise occurs in mid-summer. Our destinations have included Narragansett Bay, Buzzard's Bay, Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Boston, Massachusetts Bay, and Maine with stops at Cutty-Hunk and Block Island. We maintain Club moorings at Block Island, Fisher's Island, Sag Harbor as well as the Patchogue River near the Club Facility. Many Yacht Clubs extend reciprocal privileges to DIYC members, as we are an accredited Yacht Club.
We are very social and like each other's company. Our shoreside social activities include the Spring Carry-in Supper, Commissioning Day, the Summer Clam Back, and Series & Regatta Parties. You can usually find informal gatherings and parties at the Clubhouse, especially after each race event. These offer new or prospective members a chance to meet others and discuss the day's events. The final event of the season is the Change of Command and Awards Banquet in early winter. After the holidays in January, February & March, we have monthly social get together.
Prospective members are always welcome at any DIYC activity.
