LABOR DAY WEEKEND CRUISE September 2, 3, 4th Port Jefferson, Long Island NY (When the sun shines, the sky is blue and the winds are good) Destination: Port Jeff continues to be a favorite of ours. It’s only 33 miles, so closer than Block. The people speak as if they were from Noo Yawk and indeed they are. The town has many, many interesting shops for Shopping! Tides: Sat Sept 2nd = 12 pm slack at Westbrook/Clinton; current with all afternoon. Mon Sept 4th = 9 am slack at Pt Jeff; current with all morning & afternoon. History: 35 years ago the sand dunes in the Misery Cove (to port coming past the breakwater) were much higher. It was fun for our kids to climb to the top and slide down on a piece of cardboard. The Setauket Yacht Club used to be at the head of the harbor. They sold their property & bought an old ferry to be moored and used as a floating clubhouse. We were there the weekend they towed the green monster in. Well after awhile the club decided it wasn’t such a great idea after all. The ferry is long gone and SYC has a very nice facility & dock just north of the original site. (Promise not to use this again next year) Harbor: After entering past the breakwater there is a large mooring area (mostly Private) to the right with room to anchor. We are planning leaving on Friday and anchoring here for the night before we go up to SYC for our mooring reservation on Sat. There is some good gunk holing by dingy up this a way. Misery Cove as mentioned is also a good place for gunk holing by dingy. Further in is the huge mooring field to port. And then the docks at the head of the harbor. The Bridgeport Ferry lands here. Always fun to watch and amazingly, no or little wash. Setauket Yacht Club: There are moorings available but you must call (631) 473-9890, the dock house & Capt Neil. $45/night includes unlimited launch service and use of showers, etc. Pre-paid reservations with credit card. 48 hr cancellation policy. They have always been most cordial. Just a short walk and you are down town. We are exploring the possibility of a cookout at or with SYC for Sunday night. This venue has a beautiful view of PJ Harbor. Theatre Three: 9PM on Sat Sept 2nd just a short jaunt up the main drag. Long Island Comedy Festival featuring NYC standup comics. Tickets: $15 for group of 10 or more. If you haven’t cruised West, here is the perfect opportunity and we do have fun. Won’t you join us? Please let me know if you are coming, that you have made mooring res, & if you wish to attend Comedy Festival (#). I will let you know about cookout & other plans as they develop. Update 8/12/06 - I have been in contact with the Commodore of the Sakonnett YC. Ed suggests that we use the porch on Sunday night. But he also included the following . . . "On Saturday, we have a dinner sponsored by one of our members which is free to the membership and visiting transient boaters. If you decided to partake in this event your group is welcome, but it would not be at all private, since, we usually get a large crowd due to the price. Free." Soo, Saturday dinner somewhere and then we will do the Theater 3 thing at 9PM. See the plan on DIYC.com and let me know if you will join us, if you haven't already done so.
