2009 DIYC Labor Day Cruise to Mystic Seaport

This cruise started for many of the 10 boats who participated by those staging at West Harbor, Fisher’s Island on Friday. There were five of us with rafts on two moorings including the Club’s.  The weather was spectacular which held throughout the weekend.

On Saturday we dodged the racing fleet gathered in the starting area for the Round Fisher’s Island Race as we crossed FI Sound and entered the beautiful Mystic River. We figured we would miss the 10:40

highway bridge but the railroad

bridge was just opening with a rather long line of boats waiting at 10:45 and much to our amazement the draw bridge held for us at 10:50+.

We arrived at the Seaport early but since our dock next to the schooner “Brilliant”, we were able to bring Ceilidh in unassisted. We tied up and then helped the other Velcro boat Just Desserts raft alongside. Then Till came in on the dock behind us. This gave us two full days to explore & shop.

Saturday evening we had the Duckie cocktail party aboard Ceilidh with great hors d'oeuvres good enough for dinner for some of us. We were happy to have the Aloe’s & Simon’s join us. The traditional Duckie Raffle was special in that Joan & Joel somehow won the first draw and got a cold bottle of champagne with a Chanukah Duck attached. It was their 42nd wedding anniversary! Glasses were filled and a toast was made.

The Morgan is on land undergoing a major renovation which will take several years I’m sure. They have constructed a stairway so that visitors can climb up to and on to the top deck. Something to see. She is definitely a BFB.

On Sunday there was much sightseeing, visiting, mahjong games all topped off by a ride down the river by dingy and a short walk to Mystic Pizza. After dinner most of us stopped at the ice cream shop.

On Monday we got the 10:40 Bridge for the trip down river. It was more leisurely so that we could take in the sights. When we got down to the sound we were able to ride the tide west to Westbrook and DIYC.

Our thanks to Just Desserts, Til, Wolverine, Twilight Zone, Lady Elaine, Katahma, Peace & Quiet for participating. And a special thanks to Linda & John Reilly aboard Shenanigans for organizing and leading us on a great cruise.
